About H.T.Parekh Library

H.T.Parekh Library: The treasure house of knowledge. It is a center of acquiring, processing, preserving and disseminating information to the user community with the motto of empowering knowledge, H.T.Parekh library is an invaluable resource for students, researchers and faculties of economics, finance, management and allied subjects. 
 The information resource in the library includes rich collection subject books, journals subscriptions, In addition, the library subscribes On-line databases i.e., Ebsco, Jstor, Science Direct, J-Gate, Indiastat.com, Capitaline plus, CMIE, Prowess, Global Development Finance online, World Development Indicator online, World bank e-library etc. 

It has well trained staff and an automated library system to enrich the user community with a wide range of its collection comprises predominantly literature pertaining to Business, Finance, Management apart from other allied areas. Its collection development policies and information services are mandated by Institute's teaching; research and training objectives.
 
Library Building: The library centrally air-conditioned building with plinth area of 1300 sq.fts. The campus is Wi-Fi enabled and online databases can be accessed through Wi-Fi. Students and faculty members can access library resources through their Laptops.

Library Timings: Monday – Friday : 09.10 AM to 09.00 PM 
                                 Saturday   : 09.30 AM to 05.00 PM 
                                 It remains closed on declared holidays.

The library services include borrowing, ILL, photocopying, OPAC, bar-coded circulation, membership with Developing Library Network (DELNET), New Delhi; British Council Library, Chennai, American Information Resource Centre (AIRC), Chennai, Madras Institute of Development Studies (MIDS) and Madras School of Economics, Chennai.The services are well supported by dedicated library staff.

Information Products and Resources

Books: Library has rich collection of well-chosen books on management and related subjects.  Each functional area such as management, economics, finance, marketing, HRM etc. has wide range of useful books. The collection is broadly divided into two categories namely lending, textbook and reference books. The Lending books can be borrowed for home reading for a period of 14 days and  The Reference books like encyclopedias, dictionaries, and stock exchange and industrial directories, subject handbooks, statistical data reports and yearbooks are available for reference only.

Special Collections: The special collection includes books and reports published by Harvard Business School, Reserve Bank of India, World Bank, ADB, IMF, CMIE, Govt. of India Publications including Census of India 2001 (all published census 2001 documents). 

Periodicals: The library subscribes around 105 periodicals (magazines+ journals) published from National and International.  The Magazines are of general interest like, Business India, Business Today, India today, week, Data Quest etc. The Journals are research/scholarly publications like Journal of Management, American Economic Review, and Journal of Finance etc. 

Back Volumes: The back volumes of journals are preserved in bound form and 10,000 such bound volumes are available in the library. The current issues of periodicals and back bound volumes are are displayed alphabetically.

Newspapers: Library is subscribing to 10 business and general newspapers. The papers are also subscribed separately for faculty Lounge, Deans and student Hostels.

Ph.D Thesis & PGDM Project Reports: The students of B-schools during their studies are required to do a project work to gain real experience in corporate world and submit a project report to organization and the institute of their study. Such students' project reports are preserved in the library for ready reference. 

Company Annual Reports: The library has Annual reports of about 400 major limited Indian companies as well as different Ministries, Govt.of India annual reports are available for the past six years and these reports are arranged alphabetically.

Launched in 2001 by Informatics India Limited, J-Gate provides seamless access to millions of journal articles available online offered by 9341 Publishers. It presently has a massive database of journal literature, indexed from 28759 e-journals with links to full text at publisher sites.

Micro/Macroeconomic database gives comprehensive and authentic socio-economic information related to India.

IFMR is member of Developing library Network (DELNET). It has union catalog of Books, journals of over 900 member libraries. Contact Librarian for getting any book from DELNET that is not available in H.T.Parekh Library.

Library is a member of British Council Library, Chennai for Inter Library lending purposes.

Capitaline Plus provides information of all Indian sellers & Buyers of products, categorized as per Harmonized system of Indian Trade Classification (ITC) and also National Industrial Classification (NIC) for all economic activities. It also provides non-financial information with news of products and companies and prices / production details.

Prowess                  (also available in downloads)
CMIE (Centre for monitoring Indian Economy, Mumbai) Prowess is a corporate database of over 10,000 Indian companies. It contains detailed normalized data culled from the audited annual accounts, stock exchanges, company announcements, etc.

IFMR is an active participant in World Bank depository library and receives world bank publications regularly.

The primary World Bank collection of development indicators, compiled from officially-recognized international sources. It presents the most current and accurate global development data available, and includes national, regional and global estimates.

Focuses on financial flows, trends in external debt, and other major financial indicators for developing countries. Includes over 200 time series indicators from 1970 to 2010, for most reporting countries.





Library Facilities & Services

The library firmly believes in service to users. It will make all efforts to facilitate academic activities of the institute. It attempts to realize Dr. S R Ranganathan's (father of library science) fourth law of Library science ("Save the Time of Reader"). The library facilities and services provided to users are given below.

Borrowing Facility: Books/ Periodicals Borrowing: Books in lending section are available for home reading for the period of 14 days for  library patrons. 

Overnight Borrowing: In addition lending books, CDs/DVDs, students can borrow one / two textbooks in the reference section for overnight reading, which needs to return next day morning. 

Reading /Reference Facilities & Services:The library has individual cubicles for personal concentrated reading. About 50 students can use the library at a time. The cubicles are fitted with power cables for charging laptops.  Subject and general Dictionaries and encyclopedias, Handbooks, industrial Directories, Training kits/manuals, Data books, Govt. of India Publications, Census reports, and year books are available in the library for ready reference. 

Automated facilities & Services: Bar-Coded Transactions: The issues and returns of books and periodicals are bar-coded. This ensures zero defects and reduced waiting line and longer hours of borrowing. The bar-coded library identity card also minimizes the number of library cards to be carried while barrowing the library resources. It also avoids the filling of borrower's slips at the time of borrowing. 

On-line Catalogue Search (OPAC):OPAC http://library.ifmr.ac.in/ allows searching the books though Author, Title, Publisher, and Acc.No, subject, Class No. and Keywords and allows users to know the availability and status of the book in the library. 

Inter Library Loan (ILL): The Library is a member of DELNET (Developing Library Network), New Delhi and AIRC (American Information Resource Center), Chennai. It can arrange to borrow books that are not available in the library. Besides, it attempts to borrow the required books from local Social Science Institutions like MIDS, MSE etc, libraries for a short period.  

Photocopying & Binding: The photocopying facility is available in the library and all the members of the library. Lamination and spiral Binding facilities are also available from the centre. On request, arrangements could be made for binding of students' project reports.

Text Book Service: The library will make advance arrangements to purchase course related textbooks and distribute the same to students as course material. This service is very much appreciated. 

Library Staff Service: The library has library dedicated library staff to serve users. The staff try their best to meet users' requirements. The team-worked service by library staff is much appreciated by users. 

Organization & Classification

This physical arrangement of Books, Periodicals CDs, Project and Annual reports followed in the library is explained below: The Books are arranged according to Dewey Decimal systems of classification and other resources are arranged alphabetically.

Books: The books are classified according to Dewey Decimal System- an international system of classification of books. The books are arranged in open racks and a shelf list consisting Call No and subject heading has been displayed at the beginning of each row. 

Periodicals: The current issues of periodicals are arranged alphabetically on display racks in library. The bound back volumes of periodicals are also arranged alphabetically in in the same section. The latest issues of popular General and Business Magazines like Business World, Business India, Business today, India Today, Frontline, Readers Digest, Time, Newsweek, are displayed in Ground floor for ease of reading. The newsletters and house bulletins of organizations have been displayed alphabetically at the bottom of periodicals' display racks.

Non Book Materials: CDs/DVDs are arranged serially in CD storage cabinets by CD accession number.  Similarly, the CDs/DVDs are arranged serially in glass-faced wooden shelves. The CDs/DVDs can be searched through library online catalog (OPAC).

Project Reports: PGDM student’s project reports are arranged according batch-wise in library. The project details are available through online library catalog.
